Teaching Practice
Procedure of Teaching
Before carrying out teaching practice, I was assisted by the coordinator teacher and teaching assistant to prepare the room that will be used for teaching practice. I prepared markers, cleaned the blackboard, prepared an LCD screen, prepared a laptop along with an HDMI cable to connect my laptop to the LCD screen, lesson plan, and student worksheets.
After the students entered the room and sat down, I opened the class with English and Indonesian greetings. I taught a little Bahasa Indonesia to the students to make the atmosphere less tense. Followed by checking students' attendance, I asked who was absent from class and then one of the students wrote the name of the absent student on a paper. Next, I motivated the students with mini games to get them in the mood and ready to receive new material from me.
After that I followed the flow contained in my lesson plan.
1. Presentation of lesson / Discussion
In this part, I discussed voices of verb in the first teaching practice and paragraph development in the second teaching practice. I used the blackboard and LCD screen as teaching media.
2. Application
Students are divided into 6-7 groups to discuss and work on the student worksheets that have been given.
3. Generalization
After discussing and completing the worksheet, students are asked to come to the front of the class and present the results of their group discussion.
4. Evaluation & Closing
I ask the students what they have learned today and ask them to answer the questions I have given about the material they have learned.
5. Assigment & Closing
In this last session I give assignments to students that must be done on a piece of paper and must be collected at the next meeting. Then the class is closed.
Time Management and Organizing Activities
Time management is the most crucial thing and must be considered because the time available for me to teach is only 1 hour. So I arranged time management as follows:
1. Greetings: 2 minutes
2. Checking of Attendance: 2 minutes
3. Motivation: 10 minutes
4. Presentation of lesson / Discussion: 20 minutes
5. Application: 16 minutes
6. Generalization: 10 minutes
7. Evaluation: 5 minutes
8. Assignment & Closing: 5 minutes
Problem Solving
I faced several problems during my teaching practice, including:
1. The HDMI cable was not working, I remained calm in dealing with this even though time was running out. I decided to open the class first and I was helped by my cooperating teacher, she found a new HDMI cable for me, while I opened the class so that time would not be wasted. And just before I presented my material on the LCD screen, my cooperating teacher had brought me an HDMI cable that worked normally.
2. I did not bring a type C to HDMI converter, I forgot a small thing that I did not bring but I was given a loan of my cooperating teacher's converter because the type of laptop I was using was the same as my cooperating teacher.
3. I did not have a printer to print student worksheets, I asked the staff working in the teacher's room to print my student worksheets on the printer in the teacher's room.
4. There were some typing errors in the power point presentation that I had made, but I was helped by a teacher assistant who checked the spelling and grammar of my power point presentation so that I could solve the problem.
The four problems above can be solved with the help of cooperating teachers, teaching assistants and staff who work in the teachers' room so that I can solve my problems quite easily.
Classroom Management
Class 8 inventors and class 8 researchers contain students who are very active, conscientious, and not shy to ask questions or answer which makes me have no difficulty in classroom management. During observation and teaching practice, all students were focused on paying attention to the material given by the teacher in front of the class.
When it was time for group discussion, I just said “be quiet please.” All students will lower their voices when discussing so that the atmosphere in the class becomes more conducive again.
